When we talk about revival, growth, or church transformation, we often think of new strategies or big events. But Jesus points us somewhere much simpler—and far more powerful. The first step is repentance. Before any lasting change happens in the church, it must begin in our own hearts.
Jesus, the Sunrise Who Shines on Us
The story of repentance begins with Jesus Himself. Scripture calls Him the “Sunrise from on high”—the One who brings light to those sitting in darkness (Luke 1:78-79). Without His light, we remain trapped in old habits, regrets, and sin. But Jesus doesn’t leave us there. He shines into every shadow, offering a new path, full of peace and hope.
The Church: A City of Light
Jesus tells His followers, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14-16). The church isn’t meant to blend in or hide away. Our calling is to shine—through good works, through grace, and especially through honest repentance. When the church lives in the light, the world takes notice. Real change begins not with outward appearance, but with inner surrender.
The Call to Repent
From the very start of His ministry, Jesus preached, “Repent and believe in the good news!” (Mark 1:15). This wasn’t a suggestion; it was a command. Repentance means to turn away from our old ways and turn back to God. It’s not just about feeling sorry; it’s about a true change of direction—mind, heart, and will.
The first believers obeyed this call. Peter echoed Jesus in Acts 2:38: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” Repentance is the very first step in joining God’s family and growing together as a church.
What Does It Mean to Repent?
Repentance is more than a moment—it’s a movement from darkness to light, from self to God. The book of Acts says, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19). When we repent:
We confess our sins honestly to God.
We turn away from habits and attitudes that keep us in darkness.
We choose to walk in the light, trusting Jesus to lead us.
Repentance isn’t just for the “really bad” people. The Bible says, “God commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). No one is left out. Repentance is the doorway for every believer, every church, and every movement of God.
Why Repentance Matters
Repentance opens the way for God’s power and presence. Jesus longed to do miracles in places where people refused to repent (Matthew 11:20). When we hold onto our sin, we block the flow of God’s blessing. But when we repent, God wipes away our guilt and brings times of refreshing. True revival never starts with a program—it starts with humble hearts.
How Should We Repent? Jesus’ Way
Jesus described repentance as “opening our eyes, turning from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18). Here’s what that means for us:
Ask God to open your eyes: Only God can help us see our sin the way He sees it. Start by asking Him for clarity and conviction.
Turn from darkness to light: Confess your struggles. Don’t hide your failures—bring them into the light, where God brings healing.
Turn from the power of Satan to God: Repentance means a shift in loyalty. We stop trusting in our own strength (or in things that hold us back) and start depending on God’s grace.
God promises to forgive every sin we confess. He changes our mind, softens our heart, and gives us a new will to follow Him.
Who Needs to Repent?
The answer is simple: everyone. Repentance isn’t a one-time event for new believers—it’s the ongoing posture of every Christian. Leaders, new members, and long-time saints all need fresh starts and clean hearts. This is how the church stays strong and healthy.
A Community of Repentance
Imagine a church where repentance isn’t shameful, but celebrated. Where people feel safe to confess, to seek help, and to start again. This is the kind of church that shines with the light of Christ—a church that draws people from darkness into God’s marvelous light.
Are there areas in your life, your family, or your church where you need a fresh start? Jesus invites you to step into His light, one honest step at a time. Repentance isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of real, lasting change.
