What sets apart a truly great church? It isn’t size, style, or programs—it’s love. Jesus said love would be the defining mark of His followers. In the journey of starting and growing healthy churches, learning to love God and people deeply is central to spiritual transformation.
Jesus: The Source of Real Love
Jesus taught, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). He didn’t just talk about love—He lived it, loving His disciples with patience, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Jesus’ love welcomed outsiders, lifted the broken, and called His followers to do the same.
The Greatest Commandment
When asked which command was greatest, Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… and love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). This dual command—vertical love for God and horizontal love for people—summarizes the entire purpose of the church.
How Did the Early Church Practice Love?
The early church “devoted themselves… to the fellowship… and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). They shared meals, prayed together, gave to those in need, and supported each other in practical ways. Their genuine love drew others to Christ. The world saw that these were people who cared, welcomed, forgave, and stood by one another—even under pressure.
Why Is Love So Transformational?
Love is the foundation of every spiritual community. Without love, our worship, service, and knowledge are empty (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). Love builds trust, heals wounds, and brings hope. When the church truly loves, God’s presence is tangible, and lives are changed.
What Kind of Love Did Jesus Model?
Sacrificial Love: Jesus laid down His life for us (John 15:13). He calls us to put others first and serve without expecting reward.
Forgiving Love: He forgave those who wronged Him—even on the cross. We are called to forgive, let go of grudges, and offer fresh starts.
Welcoming Love: Jesus loved outsiders and the hurting. We are to break down barriers and welcome all people into God’s family.
Practical Love: He fed the hungry, healed the sick, and comforted the lonely. Love shows up in action—helping, giving, serving.
How Can We Love Like Jesus?
Abide in Christ: Stay close to Jesus through prayer and His Word. His love will fill and overflow through you.
See Others as God Sees Them: Every person has value and dignity. Ask God for eyes to see others as He does.
Meet Needs: Look for practical ways to encourage, support, and bless those around you.
Forgive Freely: Release bitterness and extend grace, just as God has forgiven you.
Celebrate Community: Gather regularly, share honestly, and lift each other up.
Practical Steps for Your Church or Group
Pray for a heart of love: Ask God to grow His love in your church.
Practice hospitality: Invite others into your home or group.
Care for the hurting: Listen, pray, and provide for needs.
Serve together: Find ways to bless your community as a team.
Encourage one another: Share words of hope and affirmation.
Love: The Fruit of Spiritual Health
When a church is full of love, it becomes a spiritual family—a safe place where people can heal, grow, and discover their purpose. Love multiplies as each person passes it on. The more we love, the more we reflect Jesus to a watching world.
