Death never asks permission before it crashes into our lives. One day, everything feels normal, and the next, we find ourselves struggling to breathe under the weight of loss. If you’re reading this because your heart has been shattered by the death of a loved one, you’re not alone. Jesus Himself knows the pain you feel, and He walks with you through the valley of the shadow.
The Unbearable Surprise of Grief
Grief comes to every family, but nothing truly prepares us for that first, crushing wave—the shock of death. It’s not just sadness. It’s confusion, numbness, anger, and even questions about God’s goodness. “Why now? Why her? Why us?” If you’ve found yourself asking these questions, know that even great men of faith, like King David and Job, struggled with the agony of loss.
“I am worn out from my groaning… I flood my bed with weeping.” (Psalm 6:6-7, NIV)
“I have no peace or rest—only troubles and worries.” (Job 3:24-26, CEV)
The Lies We Hear in Our Sorrow
When we’re vulnerable, the enemy often whispers lies. He tells us, “You’ll never feel whole again. God must be far away. Your pain is proof your faith is weak.” Friend, these are not God’s words. Jesus called Satan “the father of lies” (John 8:44). Your questions and tears do not disqualify you from God’s love—they draw Him close.
Grief Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
Your journey may look different than your neighbor’s. Some grieve with loud tears, others with silent hearts. What matters is not “doing it right,” but allowing Jesus to carry you, one faltering step at a time. God’s Word reminds us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
Practical Steps for Surviving the Shock
Don’t rush the pain. It’s okay to rest, cry, or simply sit in silence.
Invite Jesus into your grief. Pray honest prayers—even if they are just tears. He hears you.
Lean on others. Allow trusted friends or a support group to help carry the load.
Anchor yourself in God’s promises. Even when you doubt, repeat what you know is true: Jesus is with you.
Journal your journey. Writing can help untangle the emotions and show you how God is gently carrying you.
You Are Not Alone—God Sees Every Tear
Daniel Lancaster’s story reminds us: the shock of loss is not a sign of spiritual failure. It is the beginning of a sacred journey. There is no shortcut through the valley, but Jesus is faithful to lead you through. As Lancaster discovered, sometimes all we can pray is, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” That prayer is enough.
As you take each trembling step, remember: God is building something beautiful from your pain. The Shepherd walks ahead of you, carrying you when you have no strength left.
Take hope—light dawns, even in the darkest valley.
