Why do so many of us feel anxious, even when we know God loves us? The truth is, beneath every worry lies a deeper fear—one that reaches to the roots of our hearts.

Imagine a beautiful pearl: It starts as a simple irritant, but over time, becomes something precious. In much the same way, our greatest growth can come through facing what makes us most uncomfortable—our fears.

In Chapter 2 of “Fear is a Liar,” we learn that anxiety is not just a modern problem; it’s woven into the human experience. Jesus Himself said the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy—and fear is often his weapon of choice (John 10:10).

But what are the fears at the core of our anxiety? Scripture and experience reveal there are four main “root” fears:

  1. Guilt – The dread that our mistakes will be exposed, leaving us feeling unworthy.

  2. Rejection – The ache of being left out, misunderstood, or unloved.

  3. Shame – The pain of believing we are fundamentally flawed.

  4. Blame – The anxiety of being criticized or held responsible for failure.

Every person struggles with these at some level, but usually, two stand out as our primary battles. Satan uses these root fears to keep us stuck in anxiety, replaying past mistakes or fearing future rejection.

But here’s the hope: Jesus didn’t leave us powerless. He came to break the chains of guilt, shame, rejection, and blame. By identifying our root fears and bringing them to God, we open ourselves to His transforming love.

So how can you break the cycle of anxiety?
  • Start by asking God to reveal your deepest fears.

  • Journal about how guilt, rejection, shame, or blame show up in your life.

  • Confess these fears to God, trusting that His love covers every mistake.

  • Practice daily receiving God’s acceptance, knowing you are valuable to Him.

Your fears don’t have to define your future. With God’s help, what started as pain can become a testimony of grace and victory.

Reflection:
  • Which of the four root fears do you relate to most?

  • How has God already begun to heal your anxieties?

  • What is one step you can take today to invite God’s love into your anxious thoughts?

God’s promise is clear: “Perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18) Let His love reach deep—right to the root.
