What does it mean to truly follow Jesus? In a world that values independence, the idea of obedience may seem old-fashioned. But in Lesson 5 of Making Radical Disciples, Daniel B. Lancaster reminds us that obedience is not about rules—it’s about relationship and trust.

Jesus, Our Servant and Master

Jesus Himself modeled obedience. Though He had all authority, He chose to serve and obey His Father, even to the point of giving His life for us (Mark 10:45, Philippians 2:5-8). Because Jesus served with humility and love, He now calls us to do the same—helping others, having a humble heart, and obeying His voice.

The Commands of Christ: Simple, Clear, Life-Changing

When Jesus gives us commands, they are not burdens—they are invitations to a deeper life. He calls every believer to:

  • Go: Step out in faith, sharing the hope you have.

  • Make disciples: Help others grow in following Jesus.

  • Baptize: Celebrate new life in Christ together.

  • Teach obedience: Pass on everything Jesus taught, modeling it by your life.

Jesus promises, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). We are never alone in our obedience.

How Should We Obey?

Lancaster shares three stories that bring this lesson home:

  • All the time: Obedience isn’t part-time. We follow Jesus every day, not just when it’s easy.

  • Immediately: When God prompts your heart, don’t wait—respond in love.

  • From a heart of love: True obedience is not robotic; it’s a willing, joyful response to God’s love for us.

The Wise Builder: A Life That Stands Firm

Jesus told a story of two builders (Matthew 7:24-27). One built on solid rock by hearing and obeying His words. When the storms came, that house stood strong. The other, who heard but did not obey, saw his house collapse.

Obedience is not about earning God’s favor—it’s about building a life that lasts, a faith that holds steady in every season.

Practical Application: The Acts 29 Map

Lancaster encourages us to map out where God has called us to go—our families, neighborhoods, workplaces. Start by praying for those around you and look for simple ways to obey Jesus in your everyday life.

Obedience begins with a single step. What is Jesus asking you to do today? Trust Him, take that step, and discover the joy of following wherever He leads.
