What makes a great leader in God’s kingdom? The answer is found not in power or position, but in the servant-hearted example of Jesus. In Lesson 3 of Training Radical Leaders, we uncover seven practical qualities Jesus displayed—qualities anyone can develop, whether you’re leading a family, a ministry, or a community.

If you long to lead like Jesus—transforming lives, not just managing people—this lesson is for you.

The World’s Way vs. Jesus’ Way

Most leaders in the world use their authority to gain power, recognition, or comfort. But Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others” (Matthew 20:26, 28, NLT).

True greatness in God’s kingdom looks like humble service, not self-promotion. Jesus led with compassion, purpose, and a heart to bless others.

Seven Qualities of a Great Leader

Jesus modeled seven essential leadership qualities that can be practiced in any setting:

  1. Love People Until the End
Even when others failed or disappointed Him, Jesus loved His followers deeply and faithfully. Effective leaders don’t give up on people—they encourage, forgive, and keep loving.

  2. Know Your Mission
Jesus knew exactly why He was sent and lived with clear purpose. Great leaders are anchored in God’s calling for their life, inspiring others with vision and direction.

  3. Serve Your Followers
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, taking the lowest role. Leaders like Jesus empower others and serve behind the scenes, meeting real needs without expecting anything in return.

  4. Correct with Kindness
When Peter misunderstood or made mistakes, Jesus corrected him gently. Good leaders offer feedback with grace, building up rather than tearing down.

  5. Understand Group Problems
Jesus was honest about challenges within His group—even with difficult members like Judas. Leaders address issues honestly, not avoiding or hiding from problems.

  6. Give a Good Example
Jesus set the standard for His followers—He never asked them to do what He was unwilling to do Himself. Leaders must be the first to serve, forgive, and grow.

  7. Know You Are Blessed
Jesus assured His disciples of God’s blessing when they followed His example. Leaders who serve like Jesus can trust that God will honor and support their efforts, even when unrecognized by others.

Practical Application: Leading in Community

Jesus didn’t lead alone—He invited His followers into a shared journey. When we bring others into the leadership process, everyone grows stronger. Lancaster illustrates this with team-building exercises and stories, reminding us that spiritual leadership is never a solo mission.

Ask yourself: Which of these seven qualities comes most naturally to you? Which one is hardest? Invite the Holy Spirit to grow you in these areas as you lead.

Transformation Starts Here

The world needs leaders who serve with humility, courage, and hope—leaders who look like Jesus. Start today by loving your people, serving quietly, and setting an example worth following.

Remember: God calls and equips ordinary people to lead in extraordinary ways. If you are willing, He will use you to bring hope, healing, and growth wherever you go.
