What is the heartbeat of a healthy church? It’s not just gathering for worship or studying the Bible, but multiplying by making disciples. This was Jesus’ mission, and it is the calling of every believer. Let’s explore what it means to make disciples—and how it can transform both the church and your everyday life.
Jesus: The Good Shepherd and Disciple-Maker
Jesus spent His earthly ministry calling people to follow Him. He said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), leading His sheep with love, purpose, and personal attention. He invested in a few, teaching them to trust, obey, and then train others.
The Church’s Great Commission
Before He returned to heaven, Jesus gave His followers a clear mission: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). This command isn’t just for pastors or missionaries—it’s for every follower of Jesus. Discipleship is not optional; it is the core purpose of the church.
How Did the Early Church Obey?
The first believers took Jesus at His word. In Acts, they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42). They shared what they learned, helped one another grow, and multiplied groups in homes and neighborhoods. Every member became a disciple-maker, helping others take steps of obedience.
What Is a Disciple?
A disciple is more than a student—a disciple is a follower who puts Jesus’ words into practice. Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31). It’s not about knowing everything, but about growing in love and obedience, one step at a time.
Discipleship is a journey. We learn from Jesus, walk with others, and invite new believers to join the adventure. The goal is not information, but transformation.
Why Does Making Disciples Matter?
When we focus on making disciples, the church comes alive. Instead of being spectators, everyone becomes a participant in God’s mission. Discipleship brings unity, growth, and spiritual health. It helps believers mature, develop spiritual gifts, and become spiritual mothers and fathers to others.
Jesus promised that as we make disciples, He is “with [us] always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). We don’t do this alone—He empowers, guides, and gives fruit.
How Do We Make Disciples?
Start with prayer: Ask God to show you whom to invest in.
Build relationships: Jesus made time for people. Be a friend, listen, and walk together.
Share Jesus’ commands: Teach what He taught—simple, practical, life-changing.
Model obedience: Let others see your faith in action. Be honest about your journey.
Encourage and multiply: Help new believers grow and share with others.
You don’t need to be an expert. If you know Jesus, you can help someone take a next step. Discipleship is relational and reproducible—one life touching another, generation after generation.
A Multiplying Movement
Imagine if every believer helped just one other person grow in Christ each year. The church would multiply rapidly, reaching neighborhoods and nations. This is how the early church grew, and how God still works today.
Practical Next Steps
Ask God: Who can I encourage, teach, or pray for this week?
Meet regularly: Share stories, read the Bible, and pray together.
Celebrate progress: Every small step is a victory.
Empower others: Teach them to disciple someone else.
Discipleship is a joyful journey, not a burden. As we walk with Jesus and others, we find purpose, hope, and new strength for each day.
