Grief is a journey no one should walk alone. In Chapter 7 of “Death is a Liar,” Daniel B. Lancaster shares gentle wisdom for helping others grieve with the compassion and hope of Christ. Whether you’re a friend, family member, or ministry leader, you can make a lasting difference—simply by showing up and loving well.
What Hurting Hearts Need Most
Many of us want to “fix” grief or offer the perfect words. But true comfort doesn’t come from answers—it comes from presence. Lancaster reminds us: Jesus was moved by the tears of Mary and Martha (John 11:33–35). He didn’t rush them through their sorrow; He wept with them.
Practical Ways to Help Someone Grieve
Be present. Sometimes, just sitting in silence with a grieving friend says more than any words ever could.
Listen without trying to fix. Let them share memories, tears, or even anger—without spiritualizing or minimizing their pain.
Avoid clichés. Phrases like “God needed another angel” or “Everything happens for a reason” can feel dismissive. Offer genuine care instead.
Remember important dates. Mark birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays on your calendar. A simple message on a hard day can mean everything.
Offer practical help. Meals, childcare, errands, or simply checking in can lighten their load in tangible ways.
Pray for and with them. Ask God to comfort them and give you wisdom to love them well.
When Words Fall Short, Presence Matters
You don’t need to be a counselor or have all the answers. Your ministry of presence—just being there, faithfully—mirrors Christ’s love. Lancaster encourages us: “God uses our simple acts of kindness to bring hope to broken hearts.”
Supporting others in grief isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about walking beside them, showing grace, and trusting God to bring healing.
If you know someone who is hurting, take a step closer today. God can use your presence to shine light into their darkness.
