Have you ever sensed a spiritual battle raging around you, even in moments that seem ordinary? In Chapter 2 of Daniel B. Lancaster’s “Satan: The Liar, Narcissist, and Troubling Christian Relationships,” we see how the enemy’s strategy is not just to disrupt, but to diminish and destroy. Yet, God has already equipped us to live in victory, not fear.
The Enemy’s Three-Step Plan
Scripture describes Satan as a prowling lion, always searching for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). But the devil rarely attacks head-on. Instead, he uses a calculated, three-step plan: deceive, diminish, and discard.
1. He Deceives:
Satan’s primary weapon is deception. He twists truth and lures us into believing things that simply aren’t real—about God, others, and ourselves. Just as he did with Adam and Eve, he exploits our desires and presents counterfeits as real solutions. Have you ever believed a lie about your worth, your future, or God’s love? That is the enemy’s deception at work.
2. He Diminishes:
After the deception comes the whisper of discouragement. The enemy wants to erode your confidence and self-worth. He points to your failures and flaws, trying to convince you that you are unlovable or unforgivable. This gradual, relentless assault can leave even faithful believers feeling small, insignificant, or isolated. But remember—what the enemy sees in you is actually God’s glorious work!
3. He Discards:
Finally, the devil’s goal is destruction. Like a thief, he comes “only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). For some, this shows up in broken relationships, addiction, or a deep sense of hopelessness. He wants you to believe there is no way out. Yet, the story doesn’t end there—Jesus came to give abundant life and to rescue us from the enemy’s grasp.
Recognizing the Signs
Toxic relationships and spiritual attacks share similar warning signs: lies, manipulation, isolation, and a gradual loss of hope. The enemy often works through people who drain your joy and diminish your identity. If you find yourself feeling smaller, more anxious, or cut off from community, pay attention—these may be signs of spiritual warfare.
God’s Strategy for Victory
You are not helpless. God gives us the wisdom and spiritual weapons to resist every scheme of the enemy.
Stay alert: Keep watch for lies and half-truths, comparing every message to God’s Word.
Build community: Don’t isolate yourself. Healing and strength are found among God’s people.
Embrace your identity in Christ: Reject the enemy’s labels. You are beloved, chosen, and victorious in Jesus.
Pray for discernment: The Holy Spirit exposes deception and brings truth into the light.
A Story of Freedom
Chapter 2 includes the story of Sharon—a woman whose gentle spirit was worn down by a manipulative, narcissistic spouse. Her journey is one of heartbreak, but also hope. With the support of friends and the truth of God’s promises, Sharon reclaimed her confidence and joy, breaking free from the lies that held her captive.
Conclusion: Walking in Victory
The enemy’s playbook is not new, and his tactics never catch God off guard. No matter how subtle or persistent the attacks, you can stand strong. With Jesus, you are never alone.
Step into the freedom and wholeness that Christ has already won for you.
