Many Christians find themselves stuck—struggling with old patterns, doubts, or hurts that hold them back from spiritual growth. In Lesson 5 of Training Radical Leaders, Daniel B. Lancaster guides us through breaking “strongholds”—spiritual obstacles that hinder us and those we lead.

Jesus has given every believer the authority and tools to overcome. Are you ready to experience freedom and help others do the same?

What Is a Stronghold?

A stronghold is any mindset, habit, or lie that keeps us from obeying God fully. The apostle Paul explains, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world... They have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4, NIV). These may include fear, unforgiveness, addiction, insecurity, or any recurring sin.

Strongholds often begin as small compromises but can grow into walls that keep us trapped—unless we address them with Jesus’ truth and power.

How Strongholds Are Broken

Lancaster describes a practical, biblical process for breaking free:

1. Recognize the Stronghold
Ask God to reveal areas in your life where you feel stuck or powerless. Is there a recurring pattern, fear, or attitude that keeps resurfacing?

2. Confess and Repent
Bring the stronghold into the light. Confess it to God, agreeing with Him about its hold, and turn away from it. Repentance is not just feeling sorry—it’s choosing a new path.

3. Claim Jesus’ Authority
Jesus conquered every stronghold at the cross. Pray in His name, declaring freedom over the area that’s held you back. Remember, your authority comes from Him, not your own strength.

4. Replace Lies with Truth
Every stronghold is built on a lie. Find a scripture that speaks God’s truth over your situation (for example: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”—Philippians 4:13). Speak this truth regularly.

5. Walk in Freedom and Accountability
Take practical steps to live out your freedom. Share your journey with a trusted friend or mentor who will pray with you and encourage you.

Helping Others Break Free

As a leader, you can guide others through this same process. Be gentle and supportive—never judgmental. Share your own story if appropriate. Remind them that no stronghold is too great for Jesus.

Lancaster encourages group leaders to create safe places for honesty, prayer, and ongoing support. When one person finds freedom, it inspires the whole group.

A Prayer for Freedom

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your victory over every stronghold. Show me where I need Your freedom. Help me confess, believe, and walk in Your truth. Use me to bring hope and healing to others. Amen.
